Welcome back to Make it Visible Podcast. I'm your host, michelle, and today we are going to talk about what may be the most important part of any talk podcast presentation creating content. It's all within that 60 seconds. Hey, you're listening to Make it Visible Podcast. I'm your host, michelle Kuei. I am a visibility marketing coach and soon to be your business bestie in the coaching business world. Not knowing how to connect with your audience, grab people's attention and get them excited to buy from you should never be the reason you give up on your dream to become a full-time coach. I'm all about making marketing the easiest part of your coaching business, so that you can turn a passion for coaching into a visible and profitable reality. So buckle up, ladies, let's get started.
Michelle :In this episode, I'm going to share why the first 60 seconds of your content matters so much and to give you some actionable strategy to nail your opening every single time. Now I know a lot of you are creating content, but whether it is video, or maybe it's a social media caption or post, or if you're actually going out there and delivering a talk, what you want to do is you want to grab your audience's attention within that first minute or so or less. A lot of times you'll see coaches and speakers and they're creating content, but they're going on to a never-ending event. So this presentation, this episode, is going to show you exactly how do you capture your audience attention within that first 60 seconds. And if you need more resources on how to grab your audience attention within that first minute or 60 seconds, I'm actually going to leave a resource down below this episode. There's a link in the episode notes. Go ahead and grab it. This is a tool that you can use to map out exactly how do you create your opening so that you can stop the scroll and actually get someone's attention to keep listening and keep watching your video.
Michelle :All right, so let's talk about why the first 60 seconds actually matter. Well, we all know that the attention span has gotten smaller and smaller and people are just getting busier and busier and a lot of time by the time we read your post or watching your video. If you are unable to get their attention, then they'll probably quickly move on to the next scene. Right, and think about your own behavior when you're opening and turning on your TV television, or maybe it's a radio or podcast If that person doesn't have your attention or it's not something that you're passionate about hearing more, then chances are you're going to tune out and you'll go on to the next one very quickly, and which is why, if you're a content creator, coaches or entrepreneur, if you have a business or service business, what you want to do is you want to grab their attention within that first minute, that first 60 seconds.
Michelle :Now, a lot of you might have heard this term. Oh, you got to hook them in, right, and so hooking your audience is about grabbing their attention. So how do you grab their attention? That's what we're going to talk about in this episode. So stay, keep listening. All right, so the hook, it's great.
Michelle :So think of your hook as something that would draw someone's attention in, and typically you can do this in a number of ways. You'll often see people asking a question or making a controversial statement or something that break the thinking pattern of someone who's busy, whether it's watching a video or reading a social media post. That hook is meant to grab people's attention by breaking their attention what they were doing before you're putting a stop and so that they will want to continue to read to what you have to offer. So you can do that by a couple of different strategies and different ways. Right, you can do it by creating a story. So maybe it's a story of two years ago. I was standing in front of an audience of 500 people. It was actually a year ago. So you can do it by a storytelling, for example. Or you can do it by asking a question, which you'll often see.
Michelle :A lot of coaches use this. What if I told you right? What if I told you you see a lot of marketers use this strategy? What if I told you there's an easy way to market your business? I'm guilty, I've used it in the past. What if I told you that everything you've been taught about public speaking is wrong? Would that get your attention? So you'll see that opening with a question is a common strategy for a lot of social media caption. Or it could be a transition for you.
Michelle :In a video, you talk about struggling with getting attention, or struggling with your everyday life and not feeling fulfilled. Right, that would be a question for a lot of you who's doing life coaching and mindset coaching, or struggling to create the habit as we go into the new year, or struggling with something? To that extent, it's about asking questions, something, to that extent it's about asking questions. Another example of how you can create that hook is some of us. We think logically or analytically right. Sometimes you'll hear me talking about people who buy your program. They would be either emotional buyer or they could be analytical buyer right. Your emotional buyer are those who, like emotional buyers, are like me. I am definitely an emotional buyer. Leave me a comment, drop me a comment and let me know, or just hit that link to send me a text message. Let me know if you're also an emotional buyer.
Michelle :I am such a big emotional buyer when I see something that kind of make me feel to be emotional by it, when I see something that kind of make me feel, make me feel something like, especially if it's a purse or maybe it's shoes. So I have this thing about buying purse. If I see a purse or wallet that's pretty and it makes me feel like, oh, it looks so sweet, that looks so beautiful. It makes me feel like, oh, beautiful, then I will go ahead and purchase it, I will go ahead and buy it, I will go ahead and buy it. And so for a long time I was working on that mindset. Oh, wait a minute, you know, I have enough purses in my closet. I need to stop. So let me know if this is something that's that you do. Maybe it's not a purse, maybe it's shoes. I know a lot of my friends. They're shoe shopper and they love to go around and buying shoes. So if if you're an emotional buyer, let me know.
Michelle :There are also other buyers who are more analytical, and so your hook could be potentially aiming towards these analytical buyers. And they want to see statistics, they want to see proof. Right. It could be something like did you know that 75% of people who fear public speaking to death? And that would be something for your analytical who's looking for statistics? Right, how many percent of coaches actually make it to have a full-time business? That will be another example of a hook that will satisfy your analytical buyers. So a hook can be crafted and created.
Michelle :Whether you're doing a video, a podcast episode or audio, or if you're actually writing the content, these strategies actually apply, right. We all want to break that thinking pattern of our audience so that we can grab their attention, so that they'll pay attention to what we have to say, right, without going to someone else's video stories or social media posts. So the first 60 seconds is very important. So typically you would start with a hook. Now here's where most of the coaches and speakers who's creating that online presence and you're creating social media posts this attention. You better have something better to say. Right, to keep me there, and that's a big struggle for a lot of coaches and speakers. Once you're opening the hook, if you don't have anything that keeps your audience staying there, then what they're going to do is, after that 60 seconds, they're going to tap out, they're going to leave your world, and when they do leave, there's no chance for them to come back.
Michelle :So your job, right as a speaker, as a coach, is you want to keep your audience engaged and keep your things interesting, and so that you did a great job on the hook. But your content? You also need to captivate them, and so how do you keep your audience there? How do you keep your audience continue to read what you have to say after they read your hook? And I've seen this, even you know, on some of the most more successful and more seasoned coach where, when I read their content and I love reading people's content I love watching videos. So I go around and watching people's video and it's not so much to judge. It's an opportunity for me to learn and also bring those content and things I have noticed back to you, because I don't want you to make the same mistakes, okay, so, in order, after that hook, after that 60 seconds, you have a great hook. You created a great hook, great, great job. Right?
Michelle :You're either opening with a curiosity, you open it with something that's profound. Maybe it's a new perspective that no one ever thought about, it's an idea that would break our thinking pattern. So you hook them in, and then your next step is actually to stay relevant by talking about why this is important to talk about and how you do. This is a lot of. It has to do with storytelling, right? Storytelling. We all love storytelling. Why does storytelling work? Storytelling works because it keeps things interesting. You may be someone who loves using analogy metaphor. Great job. Those are great strategies that you can use and incorporate into storytelling.
Michelle :But you want to stay relevant by telling relevant story based on the hook that you just told them. All right, so let's say, two years ago, I was standing in front of an audience of 500 people and there I was, my palm was sweaty, my knees were shaking and the audience went silent, and that, my friend, is another hook within the hook. So the goal for your storytelling is not only just to tell the story. You want to tell a sub or smaller hook, right, you continue to hook them in so that they want to explore and listen to. Well, okay, so tell me about the story that you were in front of the 500 people and what happened when they went. The radio silence, right. And so that's something that continued to spark that curiosity of oh, this might be something interesting.
Michelle :And then your next step so once you have, once you share that relevant story, your next step is you want to kind of bring yourself into the picture, like who are you and what makes you qualify in speaking on this topic, or what makes you qualify in teaching this or sharing this on this topic, or what makes you the expert in talking about this particular subject, what makes you the subject matter? So you wanted to kind of introduce yourself. And I'm Michelle, and I am four feet four inches tall, I walk with crutches, but yet I hike 26 miles of Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. So just within a three line, I kind of position myself as to what makes me qualify to be here to share something with you, right? So share the hook. You have the hook. Hook them in, tell them about what is the topic that you're going to break their thinking pattern. And then you want to share some relevant story and what makes this a great, great thing that they should be hearing and continue to keep listening. And then you want to bring yourself in as to what makes you the subject matter. So we talk about the kind of the anatomy of how you're going to structure this within all within that 60 seconds, maybe even up to a minute or two, right? So all this information it doesn't have to be a long laundry list of this is who I am, here's my story, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. You want to keep it condensed to the point so that you get all the information in just within that couple of minutes.
Michelle :Once you introduce yourself, you might want to either continue your content or continue your speech with something that is of value. And what do you do? How do you demonstrate the value? Well, it could be. If your talk is about teaching someone of how to have developed more courage, for example, then what are your? What are your teaching point about courage? Well, number one, you need to recognize your own strength. Number two you might need to do things that that would scare you a little bit. So these are the talking point, these are the teaching point, based on the stories that you have just shared and your area of expertise, and that pretty much close up the speech or the content so that you can share all just within like more than five minutes, or seven minutes, or 10 minutes right, you can pretty much go through this same structure whether you're doing a video or you're doing a social media post. This framework would work okay.
Michelle :So that's kind of summarized in terms of how do you grab people's attention within that 60 seconds? And nowadays, because 60 seconds is so valuable that anyone, if you don't have them in that 60 seconds, they're gone, they're moving on to the next thing. So you want to make sure that you're opening with something that's interesting, and I gave you three examples of what would make it interesting, and these are just three examples. And what you want to remember is, anytime you use anything, it's something about breaking the thinking pattern, breaking their behavior pattern. They could be doing laundry, they could be going to grocery store. They could be thinking, oh, what am I going to have for lunch. The idea of that hook is you want to break that behavior, whatever that they're doing before, so that they can put everything else on the pause and listen to you for the next five minutes or three minutes or however minute. Your video is going to be long and this applied. So the same strategy applied to those of you who just feel comfortable in creating a social media post.
Michelle :Maybe you just want to and something that will continue that Think of it as like a choo-choo train, the way I like to think of it. As a choo-choo train. You have the beginning of the train right, the train that actually pulls the rest of the things together. So you have the head of your train and your story is basically all the subsequent blocks that you're going to hook onto it, and so your story. You wanted to make sure that it's relevant to what you're talking about, and you may have all kinds of different stories that you can share, but you wanted to make sure that it's something that's relevant to the hook or to the idea that you have just shared relevant to the hook or to the idea that you have just shared and you continue to do that, so that they will want to keep reading your story or keep listening to your story, and then, finally, you want to introduce yourself, what makes you qualify, what makes you the expert on this subject matter, and then end it with some type of values, right? Either a tip if you're a coach, maybe there is some new perspective that you would like to offer, or maybe it's a new call to action that you want your audience to do. So provide some kind of values to what they're walking away with.
Michelle :This and that is basically your structure for any type of content that you're going to be creating, whether it's a speech or your social media post.
Michelle :So, if you like, like I said, I created a free resource for you and you can find the link down below this episode notes, and I'm going to share the link for you. And this worksheet, this guide, is going to help you to map out what is your, how do you grab people's attention within that 60 second, and this is totally entirely free to you. I put together because I know a lot of you are looking to create more video content, to create more social media content, and it's really, really important for you to kind of stand out right, because there's so many people are creating content nowadays and there's so many people doing this exact same thing that you're doing, so how do you stand out within that first 60 seconds? That's very important for you. Okay, if you like this episode, as always, be sure to subscribe to the podcast and also share this episode with someone who needs to hear it, and I will see you. No, I will. I will be back next week with a new episode and we'll talk soon. Bye.
