Michelle Kuei:

So today we are going to talk about the imposter syndrome of being a newbie coach and if you are new to me, I'm Michelle. I'm your host at the Make it Visible podcast. This is a podcast where we talk about shining a light on those hidden challenges as you're building your coaching business, also to help you to step into your power as a coach, and one of the biggest struggles that I see a lot of newbie coaches are experiencing is actually the imposter syndrome. It's that little voice that in our head constantly reminding ourselves hey, you can't do this, this is totally impossible. You might have worked through and done a lot of personal development, but this is completely new. So let's talk about how it actually sneaks up to us and why it makes us starting question our own identity and, most importantly, how can we actually break free from it.

Michelle Kuei:

So just recently, I was on a call with my mastermind clients and there's multiple people who have exhibited the sign of this slight imposter syndrome coming back in their life in there as a coach, and it's hitting them pretty harsh. And this is why I started to incorporate the mindset coaching. I actually have a mindset coach who work with clients, especially when you're building your business out, and so I personally have struggled with imposter syndrome for a very, very long time, and those of you who's been following me on my podcast, you know that one of the big reasons that I started this coaching business journey, this coaching journey at all, it was because of that imposter syndrome, that negative self-talk, constantly being reminded that I am not good enough, I'm not strong enough, I'm not pretty enough, I'm not brave enough. And so, though all those enoughness, I thought I had graduated from it, but little did I know. When I stepped into my business, it came back and started to haunt me. And so, as I'm developing my program, as I start working with more clients, more newbie coaches and coaches who are like their first, first year and third year into their business, I see this topic start surfacing again, and how it shows up is a lot of time.

Michelle Kuei:

I hear coaches said well, I don't know if I can do that. You know, I'm not. I'm not an experienced coach. I feel like I can charge. I'll just charge a little bit just so that I can get started, or I'll just charge a little bit so that I can get the experience, or I'll just start exchanging some free coaching, like barter coaching, so I can just get started. So if that sounds like you, today's episode is totally designed for you.

Michelle Kuei:

Today we're going to explore the imposter syndrome and how it shows up in early stages of our coaching business, why it leads us to losing our sight of our true identity. And if you're someone who's struggling with your coach identity, you're struggling with the I help statement. This is going to help you to navigate through it and hopefully that will provide you with some clarity in terms of how do you tackle it and how do you navigate through this resurfacing imposter syndrome. All right, and those of you who's been following me on social I really appreciated it. You can find me on Instagram, facebook, linkedin, and currently I am running a visibility marketing bootcamp. This is a bootcamp that it's probably going to be the last event of the year. So if you've been wanting to build your coaching business and you have no idea of how to actually bring it out, make it visible, market your coaching business so that you can start attracting the right client into your business, then this is a bootcamp that you definitely don't want to miss.

If you've been waiting for a sign, this is your sign. So go and register and sign up at visibilitymarketingbookcampcom and we kick off the first day on Friday, september 20th.

Michelle Kuei:

Okay, so back to the imposter syndrome. First of all, what is imposter syndrome? And a lot of my listeners are coaches, so I don't need to, you know, go over in too much detail of what imposter syndrome is, and it's really just that nasty voice in our head. Right, we feel like, no matter how much we have accomplished we have achieved up until this point, it's still there's a little bit of self-doubt, a fear of being exposed as being a fraud. And I think it's more relevant in the sense that, as we're developing our coaching business, some of the things that you talk about you might not have experience with. So, for example, a couple of weeks ago, I was in a community platform and one of the things that I saw a coach talked about was how do I describe a result when I don't even have the clients yet? And the feedback I gave to that coach was that, yes, you may not have paying clients whom you were able to provide the result, provide the outcome with, but if you think about your own journey, right, you came this far and you were able to accomplish a lot of things. So, initially, especially for newbie coaches out there, if you're struggling with demonstrating the value, demonstrating the result for your potential client to see and to understand, then you always want to go back to your own experience of how you have overcome all these challenges and got this far. You yourself is a perfect testimonial, right? So don't feel like you are a fraud or you have no experience in working on this. You spend a whole lifetime working through your personal development journey and you are your best testimonial in that sense.

Michelle Kuei:

And so this imposter syndrome becomes, it resurfaces as we're going into something new, we're going into stepping into a new role, stepping into a new title, and so, if you really think about it, you know it's that ability to recognize that. Yeah, you know, I've been working so hard in graduating from the imposter syndrome in my personal life and now I am an entrepreneur. How does that imposter syndrome resurface and it's showing up again? And how do I actually, now that you have the skills, how do I create a safety net for myself that every time I experience this imposter syndrome, I have a way of getting myself out of it? And so why does newbie coaches have this? They're more prone to this imposter syndrome.

Michelle Kuei:

Well, it's quite simple, right? Because we're stepping into a new role, we're stepping into a new title, we're stepping into something that is completely different than what we're experiencing in the past. But if you think about, there's always the universe, always sends us signs and signals. So in order to break that pattern, it requires you to have that awareness right. And so if you are unaware that this is how your imposter syndrome may show up in your business, in your entrepreneur life, then it's easily to get into that feeling of, oh, I'm not good enough, oh, I'm not experienced enough, oh, I need more free hours in order to make up for the fact that I don't have any experience. And so and the thing about being an entrepreneur is also doesn't help as you're putting yourself out there, as you're making yourself visible, you're going to see a lot of you know, like that comparison trap, right.

Michelle Kuei:

It's easy to look at someone else's journey and think that, oh my gosh, you know how that comparison trap, right. It's easy to look at someone else's journey and think that, oh my gosh, you know how are they able to accomplish all that? And look at where I am. So we go into that comparison trap, thinking how easy it is for someone else to actually accomplish and leading the way while I'm still here trying to battling my personal life, juggling multiple duties and job responsibilities, and I'm just not good enough. I just don't have what it takes to be at that level. And so you find yourself in that comparison trap very easily, because you know we all look at others to feeling inspired, feeling motivated, and that can actually become something that does you more harm than do you more good. We start to kind of get confused and get into this mindset of I need to be that place at this moment, at this timeline. And so we create this invisible timeline for us to accomplish.

Michelle Kuei:

And when you felt short, when life happened, things that got distracted, maybe you got distracted and you kind of steer off that path, then, you know, this imposter syndrome comebacks and start to haunt us oh, I'm not good enough. That feeling of I need to travel fast enough to be better enough in order to be like that person. And so that's why a lot of newbie coaches are prone to this imposter syndrome that's coming back to their life again, without being aware of this could happen. And so when that happened, what do we do? We start having a lot of self-doubt, right? You start to shifting from a place of passion to a place of performance, right?

Michelle Kuei:

So when you're passionate about coaching, when you're passionate about the things and the work that you do, you're motivated, you're self-motivated, you're driven there's nothing that you cannot accomplish and you're willing to put in the work, and the work doesn't feel like work anymore because it's part of your passion. But when you go into that performance mindset from the passion mindset, then it becomes work. You wake up in the morning feeling like, oh, I have to put out another social media post. You wake up in the morning and thinking that, oh, I have to do more marketing. Oh, I know, I have to do more video, but I can't because I have to do X, y and Z or I'm not good enough on the video, or I just don't know. I'm just not tech savvy enough.

Michelle Kuei:

So you start shifting from that passion mindset into a performance mindset, and that's why you start feeling like there's a lot of things that need to be done, but you don't have the time, energy and capacity to actually get it done, because these are work and responsibility that you have to do. And so your coaching business become part of the job rather than the passion that you have called into, and so that self-identity can easily become at risk, because now, instead of seeing it as, oh, I really enjoy doing it, now it becomes something that's oh my gosh, this is something that I would have to do, but I don't love it and I wish I can just get it away. But you're looking at your resource. Your resource might be limited, especially in that first year to third year of business, and so you're stuck. And so it makes perfect sense why that feeling of overwhelm and just exhaustion. Right, and you just wish that I just have a simple, clear path, a blueprint that can show me, just step by step, where to go. But we forget that you have that blueprint right in front of you.

Michelle Kuei:

What you need to do is realign yourself, refocus recenter and understanding what exactly is your next step, what exactly where are you stuck? And so, when we start going into the spiral of oh these are all the things I have to do, and I have to do them all, and I have to do this, I have to do that you start shifting your energy to all over the place rather than focusing on the most immediate need of how you can move forward. And sometimes moving forward is just maybe booking a call and talk to a business coach, talk to a marketing coach. I'm always available, so if you want to send me a text message, I'm happy to talk to you. But it's about having that clarity, knowing that here's where I'm at, here's what I need, here's a resource that I am able to use or utilize and so that I know what my next step would be. Let me figure out the how to later, but at least I know that here are my step and these are the. This is the path I can realign myself back into Right. So we're all coaches.

Michelle Kuei:

So you know that having that awareness is only step number one. Then you need to actually to have some type of action plan. Right, your plan. Now that you have your awareness, what do you want to do about it? Having awareness that, hey, my imposter syndrome, I'm losing my self-identity in this business, I need some clarity in terms of where I can go, what are resources that you have. So you start creating some type of plan and action steps that you can take so that you can self-direct and self-correct onto that path again, right, and that's how you refocus and getting back on track and start picking up that momentum again. And you know, I don't know about you, but personally, when I was struggling with imposter syndrome, I didn't just overcome it, I didn't just graduate from imposter syndrome school. I had to take these actionable, little tiny, actionable steps in order to figure out what is it that I'm experiencing and what is my next tangible steps that I need to take right, and so here are some of the tips that I wanted to share with you how do you break free from this impasse syndrome that's reclaiming your coach identity, and perhaps this is going to give you some clarity in terms of what your next step would be and what do you need to do in order to get there right.

Michelle Kuei:

So one of the things I teach inside my Profitable Coach Formula is we start with understanding your why. Why did you become a coach in the first place and why is this coaching business important to you? A lot of time when we have that imposter syndrome is because we lose our focus of why we do what we do in the first place, and that's about reconnecting you back to the passion that you have. You're passionate about coaching why, of all the careers, of all the things that you can do, you could be a therapist. You could be a therapist, you could be a counselor, you could be a volunteer somewhere. You could do a lot of things in life, but why coaching? And so you wanted to reconnect to what you are passionate about in the first place, what got you here in the first place, and that is going to allow you to paint a better than vivid picture about why and what am I here to do on this planet? Right, it's about connecting your passion. It's about connecting to your purpose and why do you want to do this in the first place?

Michelle Kuei:

The second tip I have for you is you want to think about your own story, your journey. A lot of coaches that I find out there, who's looking for that coach identity, my I help statement. You know, what is it that I do for other? How do I do it? What's my signature offer? What do I do this? A lot of us look for that outside answer. We search out there, like what would be something that's demanded on the market, right? What does the market want? What does my dream clients want? What does this person want? What does that person want? But what about what you want? Right, what about what you want? Don't you have like a passion of, like a cause that led you here that you firmly believe by helping others on, that cause is going to make this world a better place?

Michelle Kuei:

So what was your cause that led you here and what is that unique story that you can bring into the world, that you can share? You can talk about it nonstop. And for me, it was the imposter syndrome and that's how I started my life coaching business. And for me, it was the imposter syndrome and that's how I started my life coaching business right Years ago, when I first started out, my unique story was I was the one who was battling with this imposter syndrome inside of me and I just couldn't get it over with, and so it prompted me to go on this coaching journey for myself, and that was my big reason why. I think everybody are negative stockbroker at some point in their life and some of us are just constantly battling with it. And some of us are able to come to a place of peace, calm and just being able to forgive all the things that we've been very critical to ourselves, but there's a lot of people out there who's constantly battling this. So what's your passion? Why do you even feel passionate about it? And that was my beginning of the journey.

Michelle Kuei:

So those of you who's been following me on this podcast, you know, early way on probably the first couple of episodes on the podcast, it's all about how I was working against this imposter syndrome. And so think about your why. Think about the unique stories that you can bring onto the table and that's going to help you to define your coach identity, because that is what drives you, keeps you motivated drive that momentum of continuously working on your business and not in your business right. The goal is to be able to work on your business on any given day and feeling like this is something that I do, this is something that I enjoy, and not seeing it as part of the work. So, even when you're creating content, it's part of that enjoyment, and you can have fun in talking to your audience. You can have fun sharing your ideas, your thoughts and what had worked and what didn't work. You can share all that and it doesn't feel like work to you because you know strongly about your why and what your story is. And so those two tips are really important and that is the foundation of how I start all my clients with right.

Michelle Kuei:

What is your why, what is your story? Let's go back to that, your story. Let's go back to that. Let's refocus, reshift, all the attention back to you, how you began, and once you start doing that, the next step is actually celebrating all the wins. Right, if you hear some background noise, that's because the gardener decided to come and clean the yard at this point. So I hope that it's not picking up a loud noise. Hopefully you can still hear me. So the next step is to celebrate your wins. Right?

Michelle Kuei:

We forget, we start to forget that, hey, it is completely okay for you, as a coach, to brag about your achievement and, as a visibility coach, one of the things I'm really great at is about showcasing your expertise without looking like you're bragging yourself. Right, it's not bragging if you have proof, if you have results to come with it. So, part of being visible, it's about demonstrating your authority, your credibility, your, your accomplishment. So it's okay to share with your audience like, hey, you know, guess what? I was invited to this podcast, or this is what I have done. Talk about it. Even the smallest wins that you are celebrating in your, in your business, talk it. That's part of your credibility, that's part of your authority building, right? So it's okay to talk about yourself.

Michelle Kuei:

It's okay to actually celebrate your journey and invite your audience and come and celebrate with you, and that will allow you to build your confidence. It's going to allow you to build your audience as well, because now, instead of seeing as someone who's just hidden in the back your audience, get a chance to really see your accomplishment, who you are, and that actually strengthen the trust that they can have within you. Right Now, if I can see that person is on multiple podcasts or being on social media or being invited as a speaker somewhere or publishing something, it strengthens my trust with that person because, obviously, if that person has this much knowledge, I can probably rely on that person to give me some answers to some very difficult questions, right? So think about celebrating your win, no matter how big or small. It's going to help not only to get your audience to see you better, but it also strengthen your own confidence, right? It allows others to celebrate with you, and when you allow the world to celebrate with you, it becomes something, a validation tool for yourself to hey yeah, I did something amazing. Yeah, I did that, that's cool. And then you move on. Okay, so we talked about reconnecting to your why and knowing what your unique story is, and that's going to help you to identify your coach identity. It's also going to work on this imposter syndrome that starts to resurface and celebrating your win okay, that's going to help you to increase your visibility and it's going to also help to have your audience connecting to you.

Michelle Kuei:

Next tip is to seek support, and one of the things that immediately after I graduated from IPAC coaching it's a coaching certification program and right after I graduated from IPAC, the first thing I did was I knew that I have limited resource to start a business, and what I wanted to know is not someone to work on my mindset per se. I know there's a lot of business coaches out there who incorporate this mindset piece into their program. They focus sometimes on money mindset your mindset as an entrepreneur which is great for their program, but I knew back then that mindset is not something that I want to focus on at that point, and so, again, it's about recognizing your resources and what is it that you need so that you can hire the right person, so that you can actually tap into the right resources? And so one of the things that I shine in terms of my program and how I work with clients is that I don't really heavily focus on the mindset piece. Yeah, the mindset piece is important, but at this point, at this stage of your life and your business, you probably need to know more of the how-to. You need someone to hold your hand and to show you the exact step of how to get your business out there, how to get seen, how to get heard and how to actually attract those paying clients into your world. How do we bring more of them? And at the end of the day, you know, marketing is really about the numbers right. The more audience or more people that you can be in front of, it increases your probability of getting and attracting the right client into your business with the right messaging and all that stuff that we talk about inside the bootcamp. So, if you're interested, I would highly recommend that you come to the bootcamp. It starts on Friday, september 20th.

Michelle Kuei:

Now, once you figure out, like what is the immediate resource that I'm going to need in order to help me to make this step next forward, it requires you to actually put in that investment. As sad as it sounds, right, as greedy as it sounds, yes, you can definitely go onto YouTube. You can do a lot of Google, you can do a lot of research and you can follow some of the coaches that you love. You love to follow. You can do all that and you can consume a lot of the free content, but I will tell you that, no matter how much I put into this free content that I'm sharing with you here. No matter how much I put into this free content, we're talking about a consistent weekly basis of work. That needs to be done, right? I can summarize all the things I do with a client for over a period of six months or three months, but in a podcast episode that only has 30 minutes, you can imagine how much information I would need to put in there in order to deliver that same value.

Michelle Kuei:

Which is why, a lot of times, no matter how much free content that you're going to consume, it's never going to lead you to the same result if you were to work with someone for that three months or six months or a year program. Why? Because through that one year program or through that six month program, you're going to learn a lot detail of how to do this, step by step, right, which is impossible to consume in a 30 minute session or 45 minute session. And I have clients, or actually prospects, who reach out and say, michelle, can you just do a 45-minute session or can you just do a 60-minute session, because I can only afford a 45 or 60 minutes. No, right? The answer is straight up no, because what you're requesting is for me to pack my whole years years of experience into a 60-minute session and expect you hand it over to you and that you are going to have the result. And we all know you and I are coaches and we all know that that's impossible to do, especially something like how-to right. I can work with you on a one-on-one session for 60 minutes and help you to shift your mindset in that 60-minute session, but for me to actually hand over a coaching business to you in your hand, you're asking me to deliver that in 45 to 60 minutes, which is impossible. There's no one in the world, right? Even the best coach in this world or best business coach or marketing coach they will not be able to deliver that. And if they promise you that they can deliver that, I hope you run Because you're building your business.

Michelle Kuei:

It's a process. It's a step-by-step process. It takes time to build your business. That's how long many of us had took in order to be here because we built. It's like a building block, right. You build one step at a time and you keep building on it until you get to that point where you're comfortable, can have that ability to know that, oh, this system worked. I don't have to worry about it. You can leave it at rest and occasionally you go back and look at it to make sure that it's still working right. But it takes time to start building and building.

Michelle Kuei:

So, once you recognize the resources that you need, I would hope that you start gathering your money, gathering your finance. Figure out your finance, because you know that this is going to be part of your investment for your business, and business itself is an investment. So if you're shying away from working with someone working with a coach whether it's a group coaching program or a course or a one-on-one coaching if you're shying away from working with a coach or with someone who has the experience, who's able to hold your hand and walk you through this whole how-to, then you know, as sad as it sounds, right? This is why your potential client is also hesitating to invest in you, because they have the same, similar mindset of oh, I'll just get more newsletter, I'll just subscribe to more podcasts, I'll just look at more videos, I'll just do this, I'm sure I'll figure it out. Yes, you absolutely will figure it out. Right, we all been there, done that. I mean in my life. That's how I was able to overcome a lot of challenges had I wish I knew someone and could hire someone. Yes, absolutely. That would have saved me so much time instead of spending the last 40 years trying to work on this impasse syndrome on my own. And so this is something that worth thinking about. Once you know your why, once you know what stories that you can bring to the table, you're celebrating your win, you can remind yourself how amazing you are, how much accomplishment that you have accomplished.

Michelle Kuei:

The next step is really to figure out the how-to right. You need some tangible steps and action that would lead you there, instead of constantly feeling like you're throwing spaghetti on the wall. And what does that happen? It actually triggers more imposter syndrome. Coming back to your entrepreneurial journey, because if you keep having to figure things out, that self-doubt keep hitting you from out of nowhere and you keep finding yourself in that moment where I need the support, I'm not getting the support. I doubt that I have the ability to actually do this, so all that becomes a vicious cycle. So that's tip number four is to seek support.

Michelle Kuei:

Once you know exactly the resource that you need, the last tip for you is actually to practice self-compassion. I know, I know, and, cheesy as it sounds, that self-compassion is really important. Once this self-doubt starts hitting you hard on your entrepreneurial journey, right, it's okay to take a break. I have those moments where I'm doubting oh, this is not working. I'm doubting my ability to actually carry through. What do I do? I actually drop everything and I don't worry about it.

Michelle Kuei:

And today I'm just going to sit in the couch, have a pity party to myself and I'm just going to not work on my business. But you got to give yourself a timeline, right? Just like any relationship you set an expectation of okay. So I'm going to have a pity party to myself and I'm going to embrace every piece of imperfection that I have as a coach, as an entrepreneur. But I'm going to give myself, like maybe a week, two days, days, three days that I can feel bad and feel sorry for myself, but after that I'm done, right. You're going to give yourself a timeline of how, how long is this going to take and when do you want to come out of it.

Michelle Kuei:

Because if you keep allowing yourself to have the self-compassion, then you're going to find yourself like continuously in that circle of South Dell and every time you you feel defeated, you lose your momentum, but you don't set a timeline to as to okay, when do I want to get back on my feet, when do I want to pick up this again and when do I want to challenge myself again? Right? So set a timeline as you're practicing your self-compassion, encouraging yourself to recognizing that, the fact that every single one of us, including myself, I, have those moments where that self-doubt really hits hard. Right, it hits hard that I don't want to do anything that's related to my business, which is why, a lot of time I take weekend off. I create a mandate that on the weekend, I don't need to post, I don't want to post, so it's okay to like take a break and give yourself that room to breathe, to do something that's not related to building your business. Okay, all right.

Michelle Kuei:

So today we talked about this imposter syndrome and how it can actually contribute to the loss, the sense of loss identity, not having the strategy to overcome it. As a newbie coach, as an entrepreneur and this is something that you've been struggling with and you're trying to get back on your feet I want you to take a moment and actually just reflect on your journey as a coach. What steps have you been taking today to reconnect with this true identity and quieting that inner critic of yours. Okay, think about all the things that you have accomplished up until this point before you inherit this new title new identity, new role, a new job, a new duty, new thing that you wanted to explore and you want to make it flourish. And if you need support, don't hesitate, please do reach out.

Michelle Kuei:

I'm here to help you to make your coaching business visible, authentic, that is, aligned to who you really are, and a lot of what I focus on is to get you back to understanding who you are in your business and how can you highlight and emphasize that message, and to share that with the audience so that not only you build trust, authority and you also start attracting the right client into your world, because those are the clients who really truly see you. They connect with your words, they connect with your message and they want a piece of who you are in their life. They want you the person that they're inspired to be, and so the more that you shine, the more that they're inspired to be, and so the more that you shine, the more that you're going to allow your client to see you. All right.

Michelle Kuei:

Next week, we're going to talk about another common challenge for a lot of newbie coaches, and this includes setting boundaries with clients. This is something I see and hear a lot. Clients are saying this and that. How do I deal with this and how do you actually maintain that coach-client relationship? So be sure to tune in and find out for more, and I hope that you love this new change to the Make it Visible podcast.
